About the Dojo

Our way is the way of karate-do.

Shoya Kai Seattle is a traditional karate school where students of every age forge body, mind and spirit through dedicated practice.

Mission

Building character through karate.

Shoya Kai exists to develop confident, disciplined and respectful individuals through the practice of traditional karate. Our mission reaches beyond the dojo — we shape young athletes, working professionals and senior students who carry the lessons of karate-do into every part of their lives.

We honor the lineage of Japanese karate while embracing modern athletic preparation. Students train in kata, kihon, kumite and tournament-ready sparring within a structured belt curriculum.

Philosophy

Four pillars of training.

Respect

Bow to the dojo. Bow to the sensei. Bow to your partner. Respect is the first technique.

Effort

Show up. Push through. Every repetition is a vote for the karateka you are becoming.

Tradition

We honor the lineage of Okinawan and Japanese karate — terminology, etiquette and form.

Community

A dojo is a family. We celebrate each other's belts, victories and growth.

Training Approach

Structured. Progressive. Personal.

Every class follows a clear arc: warm-up, basics (kihon), forms (kata) and sparring (kumite). Each belt level has a defined curriculum so students always know what they are working toward.

01

Foundations

Stances, blocks, strikes — the alphabet of karate.

02

Forms (Kata)

Choreographed sequences that develop precision and power.

03

Sparring (Kumite)

Controlled partner work that sharpens timing and courage.

04

Competition Track

Optional pathway for tournament athletes and elite training.
